Fall '10 Anime Reviews - 侵略!イカ娘

11:42 PM

Back again! I think I'm going to focus a wee bit more on the recently aired Winter series rather than brood over these fall series. Maybe one or two more of these and I'll call it quits for this.

Title: 侵略!イカ娘, Shinryaku! Ika Musume, Invasion! Squid Girl
Genre: Comedy, Slice of Life
Animation Studio: Diomeda
Licensed by: Crunchyroll

Ika-musume was one of the best series of the fall. According to 2chan, it was in the top 3 of their list.

Character wise, this show topped the charts with the cast of zany characters. From the obsessed Sanae to the genius-but-not-quite alien chasing M.I.T. graduates and back around to the ridiculously moe-some イカ娘, this series covers a wide array of archetypes. While some characters remain static (the trio of scientists...plus Cindy), others get the chance to develop amidst all the zany hi-jinks. Sanae...might have taken a step or two back.

Ika-chan's ridiculously moe-some faces. The biggest one is one of my favourites.

The story is fairly straight forward. Those who are fans of ケロロ軍曹 (Keroro Gunsou / Sgt. Frog) will probably like this series because of how similar the premises are. A botched invasion attempt results in becoming a freeloader. Except Ika musume's treated just a wee bit better than Keroro is. Plus she's cuter and better behaved. And doesn't go berserk every monsoon season. And doesn't have Earth destroying technology. ;o; And doesn't have comrades. To her knowledge at least.

Last but not least, I can't talk about Ika-musume without mentioning Chibi-Ika. She first appeared in the third segment of episode 5, a silent segment aside from Chibi-Ika's various squeaks and sound effects made by her (like running into a wall and whatnots). It was ridiculously cute, and the end of the segment was so touching. And I'm not talking about the actual segment end with Sanae.
